Group Psychotherapy Rotation

Duration: This rotation may be short-term (i.e. 4 months, conducting a short-term therapy group) or may extend for the entire year, as negotiated.

Educational Goals: Residents will learn to conduct group therapy in a range of modalities and with a broad scope of patients. In addition to attending a theory seminar designed for advanced group students, they will:

1. Participate in evaluating patients with psychiatric and/or medical disorders for group therapy, in an evaluation seminar in the OPD.

2. Learn how to present an option of group therapy, and how to communicate that option to patients and other caregivers that may be working with that patient.

3. Generate alliances with the patients and with their other caregivers in order to make the group therapy an integral aspect of that patient’s total care.

Course Description: 1. One hour for evaluation.

2. One hour meeting of supervision and evaluation of appropriateness of group therapy for that patient.

3. One and one-half hours of conducting a group, weekly.

4. One hour seminar, every other week.

Expectations: This rotation is an advanced experience, and is not to be taken in addition to the group therapy requirement for all residents, as described and mandated in the core curriculum. This is mainly designed as a fourth-year elective, although some exceptions may apply.
