Community Psychiatry

Duration: 10 hours per week for four months.

Educational Goals: The resident will learn about treating the patient in the community setting, gaining a comprehensive knowledge of community psychiatry, a basic knowledge of cross-cultural psychiatry and a comprehensive knowledge of community resources and how to access them. Additionally, residents should gain a working knowledge about public sector psychiatry and how to access publicly funded programs and resources.

Course Description: In the course of the rotation, the resident will have the opportunity to learn about a variety of community resources and will gain first hand knowledge of how to access and utilize these supports in the treatment. Additionally, the basics of cross-cultural psychiatry will be taught and residents will gain an understanding of some culture bound syndromes and how to treat them in Cambodian, Vietnamese and Latino immigrant populations. Residents will become familiar with Public Sector Psychiatry and Department of Mental Health funded programs and learn how to obtain entitlement to these programs for their patients. Additionally, the residents will have the opportunity to serve as consultants to a variety of community agencies, the court system, schools and a broad variety of governmental and community agencies and treatment programs.

Expectations: To spend four hours per week during the rotation working with multidisciplinary teams treating patients in a community clinic setting and six hours per week consulting to a variety of community agencies and organizations.
