Child Psychiatry Rotations

CHILD MGH

Contact: Eugene Beresin, M.D.

Duration: 3 months, 1 hour per week.

Educational Goals: These weekly rounds will present an overview of principles of emergency evaluation of acute problems in child and adolescent psychiatry. Topics will include: techniques of assessment, crisis intervention, when and how to make referrals, forensic issues, and techniques of emergency treatment. Time will be give for case reviews.

CHILD MCLEAN HOSPITAL

Contact: Jean Frazier, M.D.

Duration: Four hours per week; PGY III.

Educational Goals: Residents in pairs will meet for 2 hours weekly with a child and

adolescent faculty member. Each resident will perform a diagnostic evaluation every other week. The resident is responsible for producing a written evaluation, ordering ancillary tests, and arranging for follow-up. Both residents will be present weekly, one performing the supervised evaluation and one observing.

Each resident will conduct the treatment of one longitudinal child and adolescent case.

Each resident will meet weekly for 1 hour with a child and adolescent faculty supervisor (different from diagnostic evaluation faculty member) for supervision of the longitudinal case. Selected adult cases will also be discussed during this supervision. Residents must meet with the supervisor whether they have an outpatient child case or not.

Each resident will co-lead a child or adolescent group with Dr. Joseph Powers, who will also provide ongoing supervision. The groups will be chosen from a wide range of therapy groups in the OPD and Acute Residential Program.
