The McLean Hospital The McLean Hospital, under the leadership of Bruce Cohen, M.D., is also a major teaching hospital at the Harvard Medical School. McLean was founded in 1811 as a private non-profit psychiatric hospital operated by the McLean Hospital Corporation. It provides treatment for psychiatric disorders and substance abuse, regardless of race or socioeconomic status. It is a leader in psychiatric research, with laboratories in genetics, molecular biology, neuropathology, neurochemistry and neuropharmacology and developmental science. The Child and Adolescent Program at McLean Hospital, under the leadership of Joseph Gold, M.D., is one of the region’s foremost clinical programs for helping young people and their families cope with mental illness and the educational and social challenges it often brings. Addressing the needs of individuals, ages 2–20, the program offers a full spectrum of psychiatric services: acute inpatient, partial hospitalization and acute residential care and comprehensive and specialized outpatient treatment. Staff includes experts in a wide range of psychiatric difficulties, from major psychiatric disorders to the effects of traumatic injury and substance abuse. Services are designed to provide each young person with a level of care intensive enough to ensure safety and promote recovery. Flexibility of programming allows for a seamless continuum of care, with the least amount of disruption to the child or adolescent. Experienced clinical teams provide rapid, accurate diagnosis, careful individualized treatment planning and the highest quality ongoing care tailored to each child’s needs. The program offers a range of treatment modalities, including psychopharmacology, cognitive, behavioral and psychosocial therapies for individuals, families and groups. To achieve the best possible integration of education with treatment, a state-of-the-art Learning Evaluation Clinic and a fully accredited secondary school are located on the hospital grounds. The McLean Hospital outpatient clinic offers a wide range of subspecialty services, including a community consultation service, psychopharmacology, Tourette’s and movement disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, psychotic disorders, pervasive developmental disorders, mental retardation, attention deficit disorder and group psychotherapy clinics. The subspecialty groups have established collaborative ties in clinical care and research between McLean and MGH. Both MGH and McLean Hospital have extensive facilities for pediatric examinations and treatment, routine laboratory testing, electroencephalography and neuroimaging procedures. Residents have access to both the McLean Mental Health Science Library and the MGH Treadwell Library. These libraries contain a full range of reference books, journals and computer services. Trainees also have access to the Harvard Medical School Countway Library and the libraries of Harvard University.
